update. started up the boat on the trailer with the muffler delete pipes in the boat and it`s not loud at all, but we`ll know more once it is out on the water...

I found out from a great source, Derrick, that they are for noise/sound reduction and anything after the water box does nothing for performance and is for noise...
cool...
maybe I`ll fab up some free flows for testing purposes and so that I can see back in those corners...

Thanks Heavy D!

I`ve dealt with sound suppression, water lockers, water boxes, free flow tubes/hoses before on various makes and model ski`s.

now on this challenger 1800, there is your typical head pipe and tuned pipe, and water box with WCV, then the exhaust/water goes straight upwards into a horizontal "Muffler", across the muffler, then exiting out the back side of the muffler and into the thru hull outlet...

Just when I thought I was done!!! after yesterdays test/timing check I was getting water in the hull on the Port exhaust.
after removing that foam block under the hull air intake, I could then see what was going on, OMG! the last owner overheated, and blew the exhaust hoses on that side. His replacement/repair was less than desirable!!!
not only was the hose clamp to the outlet loose, the clear hoses that come from the "T" (cylinder drains) were also melted to the side of the muffler...

ok, removed the muffler, oriented the clamps better for access for tightening, replaced drain lines from the T to the outlet.
reinstall.
went on the shake down run this morning for 2 hours to break in the engines, and still have some water coming from that area...

I do believe that it could be a cracked thru hull outlet or deformed from over heated. There was a good chunk missing from the edge, but still appeared to have plenty of hose grab...

I will have to investigate further.

Man it really would be nice to clean up some of that real estate inside the engine compartment. having that huge foam block removed and cleaning that portion of the hull, looks very nice and clean!

MY question (after all that)

with experience with ski`s, removing the sound suppression had very little if none at all effect on engine performance. Other than for noise reduction, what is the purpose of these hot home water heater sized mufflers???

it sure would be nice to take out that clutter, fabricate free flows and call it a day. then I would be able to see that entire corner where the outlet goes thru the hull...

this is my own fault for not checking this last connection while I had the engines out... live and learn...

it`s no picnic trying to reach back under there...lol...

sooo, is there any performance loss or additional tuning required if these mufflers are taken out for testing and checking for leaks purposes???
